My wife got a traffic ticket in King County and we are trying to defer it. This is her first one in ten years so she should be eligible. Does anyone know if this can be done either online or via regular mail? Is going to the court in person mandatory in this case?
She had to appear in court and the judge offered qualified people to use a deferral option. She said that some violations do not qualify, e.g. speeding above 25 mph would not be allowed to opt out for deferral.

You didn't say what kind of ticket she got but I think the other person is wrong. I got my first (as in never before) ticket a few weeks back because I didn't yield to someone on a crosswalk. My ticket was for $126 and it was given to me by the Lake Forest Park police. I went to LFP city hall the next day (LFP is at the north end of King County), went to the window labled "courts" and paid $150 (you pay a bit more for having the ticket deferred). YOU DO NOT have to appear in court. I could have done this over the internet but I wasn't sure and I wanted a reciept from a clerk.

It requires appearing in court.
